Public Health Project Rajshahi (PHPR)

DASCOH is implementing the Public Health Project Rajshahi (PHPR)- Phase-ll with the funding assistance of Swiss Red Cross (SRC). The project has been started from January 2009 based on the learning and experience of Phase-1. The project covers all nine Unions and 2 Paurashava of Godagari Upazilla aiming to improve the health status of 368,443 people within the period of 2009-2012. The project improves the capacity of UPs to deliver and manage water and sanitation services through interaction with the community and to incorporate the community demand in the UPs/Paurashavas annual budgets/plans. DASCOH support the installation of water points and uses the safe water supply as an entry point to improve local governance which gives a direct benefit to the community people, especially the poor who gain access to safe drinking water and sanitation. Through open dialogue sessions and poverty mapping at village level the community members get a deeper understanding about participatory planning process while at the same time the leadership and negotiating skill will be enhanced considering gender, climate change and HIV/AIDS aspects in their daily life. For this purpose DASCOH initiated enhancing the capacities of Unions and communities and the local partners on resource management, especially on WatSan issues and institutionalizing procedures to ensure governance.

Activities of the project are being delivered through participatory approach meaning that the Community Based Organizations (CBO), Community Resource Persons (CRP) and Union Parishads are directly participating to achieve the objectives of the project.
For implementing the project activities at community level, three Partner non government organization (PNGO)s are working. PNGOs are engaged to implement the software components of the project like community mobilization and formation of CBOs, the activation of CRP and providing hygiene training to the communities. The hardware components like the delivery and installation of water points and sanitary latrine are implemented directly through the Union Parishad and Paurashava. DASCOH provides technical support and training to the local partners and UP/Paurashava level.
